That's true of Moby Dick, and it's certainly true of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, which renders the process of designing a great video game as enthralling as the pursuit of that great white whale. Because, whatever its subject, when a novel is powerful enough, it transports us readers deep into worlds not our own. I'm not a "gamer" I know as much about expansion packs or terms like "adaptive tile refresh" as I do about harpooning a whale. After all, it's about two childhood friends who become legendary names in the world of video game design. ![]() ![]() When I first picked up Gabrielle Zevin's new novel, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, I doubted I would stick with it. ![]()

![]() ![]() Today, too, we have much going on around the world and superheroes have their place to ease our stress and give us hope. People needed a break from reality, while they also needed to see that good can triumph over evil. ![]() Think back to when comic books first became popular during the Depression and then during WWII. This seems to be especially true in troubled times. Many of our myths and superhero stories revolve around this kind of plot. Evil needs to be dominated and destroyed. We’re also drawn to characters and stories where good takes on evil. We’re drawn to these characters who save the day, in spite of (or because of) their flaws. Most of these characters have some minor flaws, but they work to overcome these in the performance of saving someone and/or the world. They feature stories about brave, strong men and gods who try to save the day. Think about the Viking myths, the tale of Beowulf, and the Greek myths. ![]() We’re naturally drawn to stories and tales of beings that are strong and perform heroic acts. Some studies have been done on why superheroes have become so popular. ![]() ![]() ![]() Either way, Tally’s world will never be the same. It all comes down to one last choice: listen to that tiny, faint heartbeat, or carry out the mission she’s programmed to complete. ![]() Still, it’s easy to tune that out - until Tally’s offered a chance to stamp out the rebels of the New Smoke permanently.
